Q: Does success come without risk?
A: No.

Ha! That answer doesn’t mess about, does it? Short, and to the point.
In fact, it couldn’t be any shorter, and although I obviously think it’s the right answer, I also think it’s worthwhile expanding on the reasons why.

To look further, I think we need to take two angles to come at it –
Firstly – what do we mean by ‘success’, and
Secondly –  to address the argument some people might make, that they can come up with lots of cases where some people certainly do have success without risk.

So, how do we define ‘success’?

Is it a certain level of career progression?

Is it fame and/or fortune?

How about a marriage and family?

Maybe a massive house or a flash car?

Of course it varies from person to person, and while it may seem easy to equate success to money, there are many other ways to describe it.

Have you heard of Earl Nightingale? He was the author of The Strangest Secret amongst many other books. His insights into success have transformed the lives of many people so much so that he’s been called ‘The Dean of Personal Development.’ One his most famous quotes is;

“success is the progressive realisation of a worthy idea.”

But you might say that if I’m leaving the definition of success down to the individual, it’s impossible for me to assess all the possible risks that might be involved.
Now, while that’s strictly speaking true, I also think it’s possible to say in the context of the original question, that the ‘risk’ can be narrowed down to the risk of it not working.

Going wrong.


Following on from that, the consequences of failure, which generally involve loss of some sort – maybe loss of money, or maybe loss of other opportunities resulting from your commitment to the original goal.

In my experience, to get to a goal will always involve action, and since the results of action can’t always be guaranteed, there will be risk of failure.
The harder the goal, the more competition or the tighter the space at the top of the field, then the risk of failure only increases!

At the time of writing this post we’re into the first week of the Olympic Games. I’m a huge road cycling fanatic and so far the Olympics has been a brutal event for some of the top racers. Not many competitors will ever get an Olympic gold medal.

So, if you look at industries like sport, or acting or music for example, for every one person who achieves ‘success’ there will be hundreds and hundreds of ‘failures.’

Or are they..?

If we look back at Earl Nightingale’s definition of success, anyone pursuing a career in those tight fields is following their passions, chasing their dreams, and acting in a way in line with what makes them feel alive.

In addition to my online success coaching, I’m also a British Cycling Coach and I’ve known many aspiring cyclists who’ve never made it onto our news programs. But I would definitely ascribe Nightingale’s definition of success to most if not all of them. In fact I’ve known hundreds of clients whose lives have been enriched by following their life-long passions, no matter what the eventual results were on paper.

In that case they could be described as a success whatever the result, because they have taken on the risks, and one thing’s for sure – they won’t be the ones looking back and wondering ‘what if?’

I did mention earlier that it’s worth looking at the argument that some people do achieve success without risk – mostly because they are following the same path as their parents, so all the relevant doors are already wide open for them, and they can simply saunter through.

I disagree!

I have a couple of problems with that view! Yes, of course, if you’re born to a wealthy family like a certain Mr Trump perhaps, or a famous parent, then doors will indeed be open for you, but that brings its’ own pressures, and sometimes the risks for those offspring can actually be greater because they have had a bar set so high by others, a process in which they played no part.

The other problem I have with that view of ‘easy success for the lucky ones’ is that in those cases, they still have to take action to achieve ‘success’, and that action will still bring consequences that can bring success OR failure.

Action still required

So, is the route to success easier for some, with less risk? Possibly, but that’s applicable to a minority, if at all.

No, I think it’s better to focus on the majority, which most likely includes my humble self, and most likely includes you too!

Going after success will carry risk, I feel clear about that, and while it’s also clear that it’s up to the individual to decide whether the risk/reward ratio is worth it, my view is that taking the risk will almost always lead to a more fulfilled life, an enrichment of the soul, while not taking the risk leads to the opposite – a life unfulfilled, a soul that will be left wondering what might have been.


So, examine the risks by all means, then prepare for them as best you can, start taking action and focus on the success rather than the risk.

It can not only change your life, it can ‘transform’ it!

Relax! Just Stop And Take In The View!

Having just spent the last three weeks on vacation, it wasn’t too hard to get me to relax and take in the view!

But with the Tour de France sadly over, and now back to my beautiful island, I’d been asked by one of my clients to share some more photos of my remote Scottish location on Facebook.

That got me thinking and so first I put together a little video slide show which you’ll soon see over on my page or my YouTube channel but secondly it reminded me of why we take a holiday and the importance of learning how to relax and appreciate what we have.

Stop and smell the coffee

‘Hang on,’ you might say, ‘Hang on just a cotton picking minute, isn’t this just ‘stop and smell the coffee’ from a different angle?’

Fair question, and here’s a fair answer – yep, it sure is, but that doesn’t make it any less valid!

We all know about ‘stop and smell the coffee,’ because we can relate to the idea of being too busy to appreciate things. We all know about it, and yet we rarely do anything about it!
That’s why I thought was well worth this little nudge, a wee reminder not only about the value of relaxation, but also the value of appreciation.

In our fast-paced and cynical world, these things are often thought of as luxuries, a frivolous waste of time.
In fact, not only are they NOT a waste of time, in my view they are essentials that we need to schedule time for.

Stop moaning and striving

It could be argued, (and I do), that the reason we don’t schedule time to relax, and we don’t fully appreciate what we have, is a double edged reason – firstly we are too busy moaning, and secondly we are too busy striving to get things done.

Striving is all well and good, but only up to a point, right?
If we are striving towards a goal, somewhere at the base of that goal will be a motivation of
freedom of some sort, but if the striving takes us away from soaking up and appreciating our abundance, isn’t that counter productive?

Moaning? Well, that’s not so good either, because moaning is just a mental way that we tell ourselves will make things different instead of taking action!

Wouldn’t it be better to do a lot less moaning, and combine that with deliberately setting time aside to relax, take a step back, slow down and fully look around to see what we already have around us right now?

Look at what you have

It could be a trip to the coast to watch the sunset paint colours across the sky as in my photo or it could be done right where you are – in fact – why not do it, do it right now…!

If you’re reading this, you’ll probably be online on a device of some sort.
That means you have the use of electricity and access to the internet, which is a wealth of knowledge unimaginable just a few short years ago.

  • Do you have good health?
  • Do you have a roof over your head?
  • Do you have food on the table?
  • Do you have the opportunity to earn?
  • Do you have clothes to keep you warm?

We often take these things for granted, and although it’s easy to do, we really should be aware of the abundance it all adds up to.

Live a life of abundance

If we tap into this idea, and start to view things in a more appreciative way, then the ripples
will, well, ripple, out across our life.
We’ll view other people differently, we’ll view our actions differently.

It really can be a game changer, because attitude change drives change of action,
and that’s what drives change of results.

So, that’s why I say we should relax sometimes and take in the view.
If you really have to schedule a specific time slot for it, then go ahead and schedule!
Don’t feel guilty about it, it’s not a guilty pleasure but an important ingredient to a fulfilled life.

Get outside

It can be done by taking a little trip outside – to the seaside, or the park, or the woods, to go somewhere to calmly soak up some joy. No matter how big a deadline I have, I always make time for a short walk along my wild Scottish beach. It’s great for calming everything down and for getting things in perspective.

If your circumstances don’t easily allow little trips out though, does that mean you can’t follow this idea?

No, not by a long shot.
It can also be done at any time, at any place, simply by opening up our mind to what is right in front of us right now. I can tell you it really works, and it feels great.

Go on. Try it. Relax and experience that feeling of abundance.

As I’m now into marketing myself, I shouldn’t be bothered by this and I do applaud their effort at times, but as a consumer, it’s usually just super annoying.

And that’s how many of your prospects feel who are constantly being harassed by network marketers about their “groundbreaking” opportunity.
Yes, harassed! And as I’m often on the receiving end of cold prospecting calls, I can totally relate to it. Which is why I LOVE attraction marketing. As a consumer, I’d much rather answer an ad, be the first one to initiate contact and see a sales presentation that I WANT to hear, instead of being bothered by something I may have no interest in.

Crazy Naked? Yes, It’s All True…


People do crazy things to get our attention in business these days, right?


Hot air balloons, funny commercials, crazy give-aways, naked pictures…

Yes! You read that correctly!

What’s the most crazy thing you’ve ever done in your business?

For me – it flat out HAS to be when I agreed for my award-winning gym business to be the first month in a naked calendar shoot to raise money for local charities!

We were a brand new virtually unknown business at that time and struggling to make our presence felt in the town. There had been nothing quite like us for 100 miles in any direction and I knew that the publicity gained by doing the calendar would be extremely valuable.

But by being the month of January, we would be the first shocking picture that the poor people of the town would see. Our picture would have the greatest impact and get talked about the most.

Most of my female staff had been too embarrassed (read sensible…) to take part but luckily a couple of members agreed to help us out and together with two of my guys we had enough people to make an interesting picture. To show willing of course, as the CEO, I had to also be in the picture.

Looking back, we were lucky for a number of reasons:


  • We had a few weeks to get buffed and (fake) tanned – this was Scotland in the winter remember
  • It was just before the advent of Social Media so no internet evidence exists
  • It was cold so there wasn’t much to see…


All in all it was a huge success and many businesses responded enthusiastically to the cause and our local charities benefited enormously.

And for my business?

Well we increased our membership tremendously and it wasn’t too long before we were voted Business of the Year!


So – Would I do the same again today?

Ha! With the advent of Social Media and the power of the internet in all our lives, it’s obvious that a crazy stunt can have a huge impact on the success of a business.

As a  prime example look at the stories surround the Kardashian girl who reputedly ‘broke’ the internet due to the viral traffic caused by her posting nude photos of her *ss!

So it’s much easier to make a splash these days, right?

Yes and no. ( A typical Scottish reply!)

The problem today is that yes it’s easy to do but the downside is that everyone is doing it.

Being crazy on Social Media is just a daily occurrence these days.

And what’s REALLY CRAZY is that many marketers are still

running their businesses like it’s 2008!


The world is a hugely different place since I bared my all on a calendar shoot!

If your business isn’t harnessing the enormous power of the social media platforms and all the internet technology available today then it will not thrive or even survive.

I was lucky one more time because as I began my online adventures I was quick to find the awesome marketers who helped propel me to the top of leaderboards and the first page of Google in my first year of trying.

Lat year I bought my wife her dream ocean-side house and we paid for it in cash.

So stop wasting precious time and money with out-of-date marketing tactics and let the internet work for you not against you.

You’d have to be crazy not to try this – butt-naked crazy!

If you’ve been in network marketing for a while then the chances are you’ll remember some of those hotel meetings where only your family showed up. Or that meal with a promising first date where you were so obsessed with recruiting people to your team that you tried to sign up the waiter. Never saw them again, right?

Luckily for many of us, those recruiting mistakes were made before the internet and social media.

Today, I see terrible mistakes being made online and these things can’t be unseen so it’s more important than ever to get it right.

The Internet Never Forgets and It’s Ruining It for Everyone Else

I once heard that success in business is all about ‘time’ and ‘place’. As a professional marketer, I would add ‘message’ to the equation as well.

Unfortunately, network marketers today are being taught online prospecting and recruiting methods, which include the wrong message, at the wrong time and most definitely in all the wrong places!

There is a VERY fine line between prospecting on social media and spamming people. I’m sorry to say that most network marketers have been turned into human spam bots by their upline and company leaders…





So if you’re still a little  fuzzy on whether you are a spammer or not, here’s a couple of little tests for you …

1) You first private message to a stranger on social media includes a link to join your opportunity.

2) You post links to your opportunity or website in the comments section of other people’s social media posts.

Add Value To Your Affiliate Product Or Business Opportunity

It makes sense that if you can add value to something that a customer purchases from you then to the customer, the purchase is worth more than the price paid. That makes one happy customer. Who might buy from you again. Who might tell lots of other people also.

The Problem With Prospecting

In the offline world, I have a huge problem with prospecting because I live on an island in an extremely remote part of Scotland. I can go days at a time where I won’t meet anyone new and so pretty soon I could have annoyed every single one of my precious few acquaintances and friends if I had been too persistent with my ‘opportunity.’

Online it is a different matter altogether and despite my geographical location I have established a successful business over the last few years. But as I come from a traditional and non-marketing background originally, I still have a huge dislike of the whole idea of prospecting.

Luckily, I partnered up with some amazing marketing leaders who showed me that this did not mean I would be a useless marketer.

I will include a little excerpt from an interesting and controversial article that Elite Marketing Pro’s top man Ferny Ceballos wrote recently about the danger of being over-zealous with your prospecting.

How many of these mistakes have YOU made in the past…?

“Top 5 Warning Signs That Your Prospecting Efforts are Actually SPAM

Okay Robin, I hear you ask. So how do you actually go about getting new team members or customers?


I follow the principles of ‘Attraction Marketing.’

I try to lead with Value, Service and Integrity and not always with the thought of a sale as being the direct result of my efforts.

I believe in being human, honest and open about my successes or failures. The mantra of ‘fake it until you make it‘ is not the way I want to live my life.

The beautiful thing about Attraction Marketing is that when you get it right, people will flock to you automatically and ask to do business with you. As soon as I finish this post, I will be contacting a lady who asked me this very morning (time difference issues) if she could get involved with one of my businesses.

If you free yourself from the pressures of prospecting and allow yourself to focus instead Problem with prospectingon providing service, then you will start to ‘de-serve’ success.

People will reciprocate and flow towards you instead of away from you.

This passive (but not inactive) method of business is ultimately more sustainable economically and sustaining spiritually.

You’re probably wondering why I’ve uploaded a photo of a couple of old batteries, right?

Well, these little gems were taken out of the back light of my treasured old mountain bike yesterday. The clue here is in the word ‘old’ as I’ve had this bike for a very long time. It’s a Specialized hardtail which was top of the range when I bought it but would be unrecognisable alongside the current crop of mountain bikes.

In fact I bought it in 1993 for an epic 200 mile ride through The Outer Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland. The bike was one of my first big online purchases and it came pre-fitted with a back light, batteries included.

The cycle ride was a huge success and kick-started my love of cycling. The upshot of that was that I then became a British Cycling Coach (remember all those gold medals…) and the founder of an award-winning health and fitness business. Through that I became an online entrepreneur and coach and this has ultimately led to this very post today.

Fair enough, you’re thinking, but what’s with the batteries?

Here’s the kicker.

I’ve NEVER had to replace these batteries before this weekend! They don’t even make them like this any more. And before you ask, I use all of my bikes A LOT!

That makes them 22 years old! Talk about staying power!

And it got me to thinking about online business success.

Staying power is a quality that very few people possess these days. We all want instant gratification and overnight results. We look enviously at the gooroo marketers who seem to live the rock-star lifestyle and we are quick to give up because we can’t emulate their success.

In my experience in business (I was also originally an accountant) both in the traditional arena and in the health and fitness field, there are very few ‘overnight’ successes.

Most successful business people and athletes I know have worked damn hard for a considerable period of time before anyone had even heard of them.

They were prepared to get up earlier than us, work harder and longer than us and when they got knocked down, they just picked themselves up and kept on slugging.

Most of what you’ve just read will not be new thinking to you, I’ll bet.

But what I want to say today is this –

Staying power is all very good – in fact it is essential – but I also know many online marketers who’ve struggled away for YEARS without any success, until they became my clients of course because my clients ALWAYS get results.

I am a firm believer in not giving up, but this has it’s limits for Pete’s sake!

So staying power won’t get you there on it’s own.

You HAVE to keep looking at what you are doing and be prepared to RECHARGE your batteries when the results are not evident. You know the definition of madness I guess – that of keeping doing the same old thing and expecting different results.

You need to keep FRESH and CHARGED in your life and your business.

If you’ve run out of juice and are just running on empty, going through the motions with your ‘hobby’ business then maybe it’s time to ELECTRIFY your outlook and get some new batteries – by that I mean new ideas, new ways of doing things and be prepared to take a few chances.

I know that ALL OF YOU will be struggling with getting enough people to look at your stuff.

It’s endemic in the industry.

And as more and more people get online it becomes harder to be noticed in an ocean of sameness. So you spend more and more on dodgy solo ads, SEO that doesn’t work any more and all the other outdated methods that just don’t cut it in today’s market.

But there is another way!
