History Was Made Today

So, today was a really big deal over here in my country, the United Kingdom, or Great Britain as some of you will know it by. It was a day that will go down in history.

A few (million) idiots voted us out of the European Union, a market of 500 million people and our biggest trading partner.

Already our currency, the pound, has tanked, dropping to it’s lowest level since I was a boy.

The saddest part for me – as a proud Scot – was that Scotland as a nation voted to remain in the EU. But because we are only 5 million strong and England is ten times our size, we’ve still been voted out along with the other members of the United Kingdom.

 

But I’m not going to despair. Despite the fact that right now my country is less safe, less wealthy (billions wiped of the stock market today) and less democratic, I know it will bounce back. Defeat is only temporary and our great nation will emerge from all of this possibly stronger.

After all, change is usually positive and often leads to great improvements.

But, in any case –

It serves as a fantastic example of why you need to control your own destiny and write your own history.

You all need a Plan B because ‘The Man’ ain’t always going to play ball with you.

I like to think strategically. Okay so the pound dropped like a stone today – but the value of gold shot up massively. And I’ve had a gold bullion account for a few years. So in actual fact I have made money today.

Also I don’t have to work for anyone else. So the economic volatility that may ensue over the next few years won’t affect me or my income too much.

So, I strongly urge you all to grasp your future with both hands and don’t rely on the ‘wisdom’ of others to look after you.

Crazy Naked? Yes, It’s All True…

People do crazy things to get our attention in business these days, right?

 

Hot air balloons, funny commercials, crazy give-aways, naked pictures…

Yes! You read that correctly!

What’s the most crazy thing you’ve ever done in your business?

For me – it flat out HAS to be when I agreed for my award-winning gym business to be the first month in a naked calendar shoot to raise money for local charities!

We were a brand new virtually unknown business at that time and struggling to make our presence felt in the town. There had been nothing quite like us for 100 miles in any direction and I knew that the publicity gained by doing the calendar would be extremely valuable.

But by being the month of January, we would be the first shocking picture that the poor people of the town would see. Our picture would have the greatest impact and get talked about the most.

Most of my female staff had been too embarrassed (read sensible…) to take part but luckily a couple of members agreed to help us out and together with two of my guys we had enough people to make an interesting picture. To show willing of course, as the CEO, I had to also be in the picture.

Looking back, we were lucky for a number of reasons:

 

  • We had a few weeks to get buffed and (fake) tanned – this was Scotland in the winter remember
  • It was just before the advent of Social Media so no internet evidence exists
  • It was cold so there wasn’t much to see…

 

All in all it was a huge success and many businesses responded enthusiastically to the cause and our local charities benefited enormously.

And for my business?

Well we increased our membership tremendously and it wasn’t too long before we were voted Business of the Year!

 

So – Would I do the same again today?

Ha! With the advent of Social Media and the power of the internet in all our lives, it’s obvious that a crazy stunt can have a huge impact on the success of a business.

As a  prime example look at the stories surround the Kardashian girl who reputedly ‘broke’ the internet due to the viral traffic caused by her posting nude photos of her *ss!

So it’s much easier to make a splash these days, right?

Yes and no. ( A typical Scottish reply!)

The problem today is that yes it’s easy to do but the downside is that everyone is doing it.

Being crazy on Social Media is just a daily occurrence these days.

And what’s REALLY CRAZY is that many marketers are still

running their businesses like it’s 2008!

 

The world is a hugely different place since I bared my all on a calendar shoot!

If your business isn’t harnessing the enormous power of the social media platforms and all the internet technology available today then it will not thrive or even survive.

I was lucky one more time because as I began my online adventures I was quick to find the awesome marketers who helped propel me to the top of leaderboards and the first page of Google in my first year of trying.

Lat year I bought my wife her dream ocean-side house and we paid for it in cash.

So stop wasting precious time and money with out-of-date marketing tactics and let the internet work for you not against you.

You’d have to be crazy not to try this – butt-naked crazy!

Test It! The 15 Things You Must Test Regularly

The whole point of good copywriting is to boost sales.

Even if you write copy with the objective of getting more newsletter sign-ups, the entire point is still to boost sales. But, how do you know if what you’re doing is working? You’re writing, and hiring, and writing some more – but do you even know if all the work you’re doing is paying off?

The best way to know for sure is to test, test and test again. Here’s my (non-exhaustive) list of fifteen things you need to test regularly.

1. Your Headline – How do you know if a particular headline works over another? You conduct what is called a Split Test or an A/B test. Make two slightly different headlines and send each headline to half your list. Which performs better? Click the image below for a great free resource for Headline Winning Formulas.

2. Your Offer – If you’re not sure about your offer, try testing more than one offer. Like the A/B testing above, only change something small, and send each to half your list. Or if it’s a sales page, put both up, and see which performs better. (Win With Robin Top Tip – Make sure you document what specific thing you have changed so you don’t lose track!).

3. Your Copy Format – Are you considering where the reader is reading the copy? If your audience is reading on a mobile device, is the copy format effective? How do you know? Test it. Everything you do online must be mobile responsive.

4. Snippets of Your Copy – If you have a long sales page, you can take snippets of the copy and reuse it on social media or other places to see what the response to the words are.

5. New Products – This doesn’t mean you have to create new products, but instead test out new products such as project management systems, social media marketing automation, email marketing programs and more. Stay on the cutting edge by regularly spending a small time testing new products and tools. (Win With Robin Top Tip – This does NOT mean you chase after every bright and shiny object that comes along!).

6. Graphics – Are your graphics the right graphics to use for your particular audience? If you’re not sure, conduct more A/B testing. Change nothing but the graphics and see how it affects conversion rates. Graphics are critically important with any ad online so you must get this right.

7. Functionality – Of course, you should test how your websites function. Does the checkout process run smoothly for your customers? Is something hanging them up along the way to prevent making a purchase? Go ALL the way through your Sales Funnel. If you don’t know what a Sales Funnel is then ask me!

8. Audience Responsiveness – Are you posting your heart out on Facebook but no one is responding, even though people are reading? If you’re not sure why, ask them. Asking questions is a great way to boost engagement.

9. Accuracy – Your copy should be well studied to be accurate and honest. Don’t post false information either on purpose or by accident. Always walk in integrity. Check your sources and check your facts.

10. Complexity – You don’t want things to be too hard for your reader to understand. If you’re using too many big words, change them to small words. Speak directly to your audience, not over them. test

11. What’s in It for Me – Remember the fundamental test for effective copywriting. It doesn’t matter what platform you’re posting the copywriting on; your audience wants to know what’s in it for them. Win With Robin Top Tip – Use the 19 Word Rule

Tell them what to do next

If your copy doesn’t answer that, start over!

12. Double Entendres – Sometimes double entendres can be funny and that’s great! But sometimes they can be disastrous. Knowing your Target Market helps a lot here. Test the water with something mild before you jump off the deep end. Be very careful with accidentally posting something that really means something else, especially if it’s controversial or dirty.

13. Clarity – One of the most important aspects of copywriting is to ensure that what you are trying to impart to the reader makes sense. You don’t want to accidentally offend someone with your words. Read and re-read, and have others test for clarity.

14. Above the Fold – No matter what medium you’re putting your copy on – whether it’s print, webpages, or social media, the important stuff needs to go at the top, or you need explicit directions to scroll down to read more. More important online than ever before.

15. Originality – Is the copy original? There are a lot of ways to test this out such as with Grammarly or Copyscape. You want your words to feel familiar to the reader, but you don’t want them to be copied. Here are links to two great tools:

In my humble experience ALL the top marketers spend a lot of time thinking about what to test in their businesses. They continually test everything down to the smallest tweak. They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t yield results!

Remember, if you don’t test a variety of factors you might be wasting valuable time and money on activities that provide no pay-off, or you might stop doing some that are paying off handsomely. Think about that.

We’ve ALL made mistakes in the early days of our online careers, right?

Before we learnt that selling has absolutely NOTHING to do with overwhelming our prospects ’till they just give in. Yet I see people doing this today!

You know that way when you’re just so darn excited about your ‘opportunity’ that you can’t get past yourself in the process. I get clients all the time who still expect a queue of customers waiting for them the instant they hit the Publish button on their blog.

The art of selling is all about understanding what your prospect really wants and then presenting them with the benefits of your solution and how it will impact their life.

 

 

 

It’s all about listening and asking questions… leading people with baby step commitments – to create what we call a “yes momentum”… answer and overcome any areas of concern they might have… and finally close them on the solution.

Without solid understanding of this process, it’s virtually impossible to succeed in sales or ANY business where you’re constantly in a selling situation.

And when you’re selling online, in print, through a video or anytime where you don’t have the prospect in front of you…you don’t have the luxury of asking your prospect a question, getting feedback and adjusting your presentation accordingly.

And that’s why writing Persuasive Sales Copy is so critical.

Your message has to be super crisp… with just the perfect word selection… anticipating the objections that your prospects have… and skillfully leading them with the same “yes momentum” towards the final close… where they BUY or JOIN your business.

If you’ve been in network marketing for a while then the chances are you’ll remember some of those hotel meetings where only your family showed up. Or that meal with a promising first date where you were so obsessed with recruiting people to your team that you tried to sign up the waiter. Never saw them again, right?

Luckily for many of us, those recruiting mistakes were made before the internet and social media.

Today, I see terrible mistakes being made online and these things can’t be unseen so it’s more important than ever to get it right.

The Internet Never Forgets and It’s Ruining It for Everyone Else

I once heard that success in business is all about ‘time’ and ‘place’. As a professional marketer, I would add ‘message’ to the equation as well.

Unfortunately, network marketers today are being taught online prospecting and recruiting methods, which include the wrong message, at the wrong time and most definitely in all the wrong places!

Here’s the truth!

There is a VERY fine line between prospecting on social media and spamming people. I’m sorry to say that most network marketers have been turned into human spam bots by their upline and company leaders…

 

 

 

 

So if you’re still a little  fuzzy on whether you are a spammer or not, here’s a couple of little tests for you …

Warning Signs That Your Prospecting Efforts are Actually SPAM

1) You first private message to a stranger on social media includes a link to join your opportunity.

2) You post links to your opportunity or website in the comments section of other people’s social media posts.

Luckily for me, I found a better way to work successfully online very quickly in my career. Rather than spending hours spamming or private messaging people on social media, I learned how to legitimately get Facebook and other networks to actually help me attract the people who are most interested in what I have to offer.

I just read this interesting and value-packed blog post by Gary Vaynerchuk, legendary social media leader and founder of Wine Library TV. He explains how he often leaves money on the table in favour of the long game. He knows he will win the war. You can read his post here.

It reminded me of a true story a good friend of mine told me a few years ago.

Let’s call him Jim. Jim had inherited a large timber business from his father after Jim had miraculously saved his father’s life when he pulled him free after he’d become entangled in an industrial band-saw. That was the good news. The bad news was that the business was struggling in a competitive market and he was hampered by out-of-date equipment and a lack of skilled staff.

But Jim was like me and had an entrepreneurial streak a mile wide so he took on an agency role with a Canadian Log Cabin company as he figured it was fairly congruent with having a timber business. He had a show-cabin built on-site and it looked awesome.

Unfortunately, the recession was starting to bite and Jim’s timber yard was miles away from any main population centres. After a few months no-one had bought a cabin.

It certainly didn’t feel like he would win the war at that point.

One day, at around 5 pm when Jim was finishing a gruelling day’s work, he got a call from a guy about fence posts. Now there is a huge demand for these in the countryside, naturally, but lots of competition and low margins so it wasn’t something Jim sold a lot of.

The guy wanted something special. An unusual wood that would stand out against the normal fast-grown soft wood standard products. Jim explained the various features and benefits of pine against larch and the costs of elder or beech.

Despite the time of day, the call lasted almost an hour. Becoming impatient by this time Jim decided to cut to the chase and asked him if he was serious about buying.

The man said,

‘Yes! You’ve convinced me on the larch wood.

I’ll take one thanks…!’

At this, John told me he just wanted to tell the guy exactly where he could stick his fence post. But he bit his tongue and agreed to have the single post ready for collection at 6.30 pm that evening.

He told me he was still fuming when the guy eventually turned up at almost 7 pm.

However, his frustration quickly turned to elation when the guy turned to Jim and casually said,

‘That’s great, Jim.

But can you add one of these wonderful Canadian Cabins onto the invoice too.

The one here in this brochure at $72,000…’

Success breeds success and Jim went on to sell quite a few of the log cabins and he never ever quibbled about giving advice for free, giving the best service he could and always creating raving fans whenever he could. So did Jim win the war. He certainly did! He sold his business a few years later and he now travels the world climbing mountains.

Now this is a perfect example of Attraction Marketing in action and it has become one of the leading methods of doing business online. I base ALL of my marketing on this principle. I started up an online health and fitness business and pumped out award-winning advice and support for an entire year before I tried to sell anyone a single thing. News Just In! I am moving to a new Robin Morton Black Belt Success Coach Facebook Page AND I’ve just bought a new house too!

So why go to the hassle of a new Facebook Page?

Well, sometimes Facebook will restrict the growth of your business if they feel you are contravening their terms and conditions. As an online coach I am fully aware of their rules and we have never had any problems until recently. Obviously you can’t post offensive, racist, sexist content but Facebook also doesn’t like Pages that are too close to the MLM or network marketing sphere.

If you’re an online marketer you should know that using phrases like ‘MLM’, ‘get rich quick’ are strictly a no-no. But did you realise that terms such as ‘home business’ or ‘working from home’ can get you red flagged?

I have never had my page shut down, the dreaded ‘Facebook Slap,’ like many have but recently I have noticed they didn’t like my advert campaigns no matter what my wording said.

After much hair pulling I eventually discovered that they had taken a dislike to my page name, or more specifically the ‘WIN’ in Win With Robin.

Now seeing as this is my business name, this could have become a real problem especially as they were fine with me using it for the past two years.

Hence I have a new Page => Robin Morton – Your Black Belt Success Coach <= which is entirely congruent with my Website and reflects what I do most of anyway which is coaching. Please pop over and give me a Like if you want to continue getting my tips and support. You rock!

Not content with just moving Facebook pages, I also bought a new house on Monday! We have lived on our little island idyll for many years now and it seemed crazy to live on a small island without actually overlooking the sea.

So for the first time in my life I was actually able to purchase a new home in cash, no mortgage thank you very much. And now my wife has what she always dreamed of – a beautiful little house overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. There WILL be pictures to follow but the weather is atrocious right now!

So, it’s true what they say. Success isn’t always a straight line. But that makes it all the sweeter when you find yourself there.

I hope this personal post shows that we can ALL have problems with our business from time to time but what makes the difference is how we react to them.

Unleash The Hero In You

Is it time to unleash the hero in you?

I remember people used to say to me way back when I owned an award-winning fitness business that I was so ‘lucky’ and they wished they could ‘have what I had.’ They would treat me like a hero.

They assumed I must have been some kind of millionaire as I had such a beautiful state-of-the-art health club with fibre-optic steam rooms and dance studios.

And I would tell them to just go and do whatever it was that they dreamed about. To decide what they wanted their life to be about and then take the action required.

Those same people who wanted to swap lives with me didn’t know that back in those early days my wife and I often cleaned the toilets of our health club at 6 am and I rarely got home before 10 in the evening. Seven days a week.

They also didn’t know that I had literally ten bucks in my back pocket when I decided that I didn’t want to live my life being told what to do by others. I wanted more for myself and my family.

I didn’t see myself as a hero. I just wanted to be the author of my own life.

And when I tried to borrow money to set up my first business I got turned down time after time after time. But I never let myself give up!

The only reason I was successful was that I believed in myself and that was it. I was no hero but in a way I became one in the eyes of others. I eventually secured funds for my business and over one million dollars was poured into my dream.

Since then I have gone on to create other projects. Not only have I authored my life, I have literally become an author. I now live on a beautiful island where I choose when and where I work.

You could do the very same as me if you would take 24 hours and use it to make your life instead of allowing it to break your life.

Build your dream – Make something – Be a producer not a consumer.

Don’t depend on others for your success. Stop looking outwards for assistance and instead UNLEASH YOUR HERO!

So my Christmas message to you is to love yourself enough to take the jump!

You are the painting, the paintbrush, the canvas, the question AND the answer to the question you are asking right now. Go on, it’s hero time!
